"To Mara!


This autumn I spent a weekend on Gotland, my favorite place in Sweden. I had been visiting some close friends and I wanted to see the Baltic Sea and the horizon. I went to Näs and the wind power plant park. Whenever the road split I to the left way, I don’t know why. Finally I parked the car and walked with my old Hasselblad camera towerds the beach. An eagle majestically circled over the trees, some rabbits jumped. As I came closer to the water I saw something in the drying seaweed reflecting the sun light. The reflection was sharp, it drew my attention so I walked closer. I could see it was a bottle, and inside the bottle a photograph and a QR code. I examined the bottle. I could extract the photograph, but I clearly saw the young, happy faces smiling back from it.

I wanted to know more, so I walked back to my car and fetched my phone. The QR code linked to Lennart Gesing’s memorial site. I was really touched by reading about the memorial project and to look at the pictures. I had to sit on a round rock for a while, just contemplating, wondering about the beauty of nature and the turns of our lives. I felt the grandness in having found the bottle here.  I gently put it back in to the sea, to enable it to continue his voyage.

I think I might have seen a picture of Lennart in Hamburg this summer. And now that I got the photographs developed I checked the site again and could see that the very same bottle hade been put to sea in Nynäshamn, and then showed up on Gotland, and hopefully now been continuing somewhere else.
